Keeping It Honest About the Founder Journey
▶TLDR
- Building a business is messy, and pretending otherwise helps no one.
- Mike rebuilt his around a simpler offer and better-fit clients.
- The lesson was to do less, do it well, and price it right.
Mike joined Caramel Lucas on Keepin It Real w/Caramel for a warm, honest chat about the founder journey. No polish, just the truth of building something.
Here is the version he shared.
The honest version of the journey
Mike spent thirteen years running a Google Ads agency. The story people expect is a smooth climb. His was not. It moved toward burnout, and there was a point where he had to downsize and rethink the whole thing. He is open about that because the messy part is where the useful lessons live. Owners who only hear the highlight reel end up feeling like they are the only ones struggling.
What changed when he simplified
The turnaround was not a big secret. Mike cut the offer down to one clear outcome, started pricing for the problem instead of the hours, and got choosy about which clients he took on. Doing less, but doing it well, gave the business room to breathe and gave him his time back. For more honest founder talk, the Startup Canada episode is a good next listen, and the 21st Century Entrepreneurship conversation covers the same ground.
