TLDR

Agency and consultancy owners tend to compete on doing more. More services, more deliverables, more custom work. On the DoGoodWork Podcast with Raul Hernandez, I talked about why that road leads to thin margins and tired teams, and what to do instead.

The owners who win aren't the busiest. They're the clearest. Here's how I think about offers, pricing, and fit for firms that want to grow without grinding.

Simplify the offer to one outcome

When your offer is a long list, buyers get lost and your team gets stretched. Compression fixes this. Boil the work down to one clear outcome the client wants, then wrap it in a short process, three to five steps, named for that outcome.

Now you're easy to understand and easy to say yes to. A named process also makes the work repeatable, which is what lets you hand it off and keep quality steady. Getting clear on who it's for helps too, and I unpack that in this piece on defining your ideal client.

Charge for the problem, not the hours

Most owners undercharge by roughly half and take on about a third more work to cover it. That's a hard way to run a firm. The shift is to price the problem, not your time. A premium problem deserves a premium price.

You can't hold a price you don't believe in, so get honest about the pain your client is carrying over one, three, six, and twelve months. When you see the full cost of their problem, your price stops feeling high. It starts feeling fair.

Vet for fit before you sell

Not every lead is a good client. Moving a good-fit client forward is your job, but so is turning away the wrong ones. A bad fit eats your margin, drags your team, and rarely gets the result anyway.

Ask better questions up front. Are they clear on the outcome? Do they respect the process? Can they act? Vetting isn't rude. It protects the clients you can help most.
