The Five Things That Quietly Kill a Sales Call
▶TLDR
- Most lost deals are not lost on price. They are lost to five avoidable mistakes on the call.
- Structure the call, do the discovery, check in, handle objections calmly, and actually ask for the sale.
I joined Charles Alexander on his show, which is built around a simple idea: do more by doing less. We got into sales for solopreneurs, and specifically the five things I see quietly kill a sales call. None of them are about price. They are about how the conversation is run.
The five sales killers
One, no structure. If you wing the call, the buyer feels it. Frame it in the first fifteen seconds: quick pleasantries, then tell them how the call will go and what happens at the end. Two, skipping discovery. Most people spend the call on features and benefits when they should spend at least half of it understanding the person's business and where the gaps are. Three, not checking in. It is easy to go on a ten-minute monologue while the buyer quietly checked out five minutes ago, so pause and ask. Four, treating objections like deal breakers. An objection is usually a question, not a no, so stay calm and get curious instead of backing off. Five, never asking for the sale. A surprising number of calls just trail off. If you did the work, ask.
Why structure beats charisma
You do not need to be the smoothest person on the call. You need a process the buyer can feel. When the conversation has a clear shape, the buyer relaxes, tells you more, and trusts that you will run the actual work the same way. That is what closes, and it is far more repeatable than charm.
Do more by doing less
Charles's whole premise is doing more by doing less, and it is how I run things too. The two biggest levers for me were hiring people smarter than me at the things I am bad at, and building systems so the business does not live in my head. Both feel scary early on. Both are what let you shorten the week without shrinking the results.
