How Agencies Increase Profit: Price Better, Scope Simpler, Fit Tighter
▶TLDR
- Most agencies undercharge and over-deliver, which quietly kills the margin.
- Simpler scope protects both your price and your delivery.
- Better client fit is a profit lever, not just a feelings thing.
Mike joined Marcel Petitpas on the Agency Profit Podcast to talk numbers. Not vibes. How does an agency raise profit without just cramming in more clients.
Mike ran a Google Ads agency for thirteen years, hit near burnout, downsized, and rebuilt it on pricing, process, and fit. So this comes from scar tissue, not theory.
You are probably underpriced and over-delivering
The pattern Mike sees again and again is two problems stacked on top of each other. Agencies charge about half of what the work is worth, and then they do about thirty percent more work than the offer needs. Each one hurts. Together they turn a good business into a tired one. The first move is to price the problem, not your hours. Map what the client's pain costs over three, six, and twelve months. Once you see that number, a premium price stops feeling scary and starts feeling fair.
Simpler scope protects the margin
Scope creep is where profit leaks out. Every extra deliverable you throw in to be nice is margin you gave away. Mike's fix is to simplify the offer down to one clear outcome and build a short, named process to get there. When the scope is tight and named for the client's result, it is easier to hold the line, easier to deliver on time, and easier for your team to repeat. Simpler is not lazy. Simpler is profitable.
Client fit is a profit lever
The last piece is who you say yes to. A bad-fit client eats margin in a hundred small ways: extra calls, rework, scope fights, slow payment. Mike vets clients and makes them a fit before agreeing to work together. That is not gatekeeping for its own sake. It protects the profit on every project after it. For a related take on the systems behind a healthy shop, the back office episode pairs well, and the Sproutworth conversation digs into making revenue predictable.
